NOTIFICATION OF THE N.M.G.S AWARDS AND PRIZES, 2016

Many Awards and Prizes had been established by the N.M.G.S, which are funded by the corporate, main institutional and corporate members to reward and encourage excellence and distinction in academic and professional practices, inventions and services.

The Awards Committee of the N.M.G.S , responsible for administering these Awards hereby calls for nominations for the year 2016 Awards which will be made at the 52nd Annual International Conference in Ilorin, in March, 2016 in the categories listed below:

CATEGORY A: NMGS PRIZES

1. N.M.G.S/TOTAL PRIZE
The N.M.G.S Total Prize is open to all the oral and poster papers presented at the technical sessions of each annual Conference and is given to the best three presentations. The first prize attracts a one-week, all expenses paid, trip to mining and/or geo-scientific laboratories or sites in France plus a cash prize of N120, 000.00. The second and third positions attract cash awards of N320, 000.00 and N 270,000.00, respectively.

2. N.M.G.S/ Agip Energy Prize
The N.M.G.S/Agip Energy Prize is open to all M.S.c candidates and is awarded to the best Thesis or Dissertation in the area of Mineral Exploration annually. The prize is worth Forty Thousand Naira (N 40,000.00).

3. N.M.G.S/N.I.O.M.C.O Prize
The N.M.G.S/N.I.O.M.C.O Prize is open to candidates having the best MSc or HND dissertation in Mining or Economic Geology from tertiary institutions in the country. The prize is worth N20,000.00.

4. N.M.G.S/N.G.S.A/ Okezie Prize
The N.M.G.S/N.G.S.A/Okezie Prize, endowed by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), is in honour of the first Nigerian Director of the NGSA. The Prize is instituted for a published and or unpublished original work in the Earth Sciences, which is adjudged to be a landmark contribution to the development of the profession of mining and geosciences in Nigeria. The prize is open to all Geoscientists/Mining Engineers. The prize is worth N 20,000.00 and a plaque.

5. N.M.G.S/CHEVRON RESEARCH AWARDS
The Chevron/N.M.G.S Research Awards are aimed to encourage scholarship and professional excellence in the geosciences. The award is for two of the “Best Published Doctorate/Post-Doctorate Research Work in the field of Petroleum Geosciences with significant impact on the oil and gas industry in Nigeria”. It would carry a cash reward of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50, 000.00) for each prize.

6. N.M.G.S/PROF DEBORAH ENILO AJAKAIYE PRIZE
In January 2008, Council of the NMGS created new prizes for the best three papers presented by students during the Annual International Conferences of the Society. The N.M.G.S/ PROF DEBORAH ENILO AJAKAIYE PRIZE was endowed by Prof Deborah Enilo Ajakaiye, a foremost geophysicist and past President of the N.M.G.S in 2009. The Prize is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students and it is for oral and poster presenters at the technical sessions of each annual Conference. The prize is aimed at encouraging and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students of mining and geosciences, as emerging scholars, to have opportunity to present and showcase their research findings. An initial grant of Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N 400,000.00) has been provided by the donor which is to be invested; the Prizes are to be serviced from the accrued interests. The First Prize is worth Forty Thousand Naira (N40, 000.00), the Second Prize thirty thousand naira (N30,000) and the Third Prize Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000).

7. N.M.G.S/O. OGODAZI PRIZE
Endowed by the family of the late Engr O. Ogodazi, FNMGS, the Prize is for the best M.S.c Project in Petroleum Geology/Petroleum engineering. The family provided a capital grant of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000.00) and the Prize will be serviced from the accrued interest.

8. N.M.G.S/DR MARIE STELLA SONUGA PRIZE
The N.M.G.S/Dr Marie Stella Sonuga Prize was endowed under the auspices of the NMGS Grants-In-Aid by Dr Marie Stella Sonuga, FNMGS, Former President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society in March 2009 for the best graduating female student in Geology at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. An initial grant of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200, 000.00) has been provided which is to be invested; the Prize is to be serviced from the accrued interests.

9. N.M.G.S/PROFESSOR CHARLES OFOEGBU PRIZE FOR THE BEST GRADUATING STUDENT IN GEOPHYSICS
An annual prize of one hundred thousand naira, (N100, 000.00) only, for the best graduating student in Geophysics.

10. N.M.G.S/Atuekong (Chief) don Obot Etiebiet Foundation for Training and Research in Geosciences
An annual award of two hundred and fifty thousand naira, (N250, 000. 00) only, in promotion of academic excellence at above Master’s degree level. The award is to be won by any person, adjudged to have produced an outstanding publication of not more than three years to the prevailing date, in area of Petroleum Exploration, Exploitation and Development, and deserving of support for further work. The award is to be funded from the initial endowment of two million five hundred thousand naira (N2, 500, 000. 00) made in 2011 and annual contribution of two hundred thousand naira (N200, 000. 00) from the commencement of the award
11. NIGERIAN MINING AND GEOSCIENCES SOCIETY: PRESIDENT’S AWARDS
This Award, sponsored by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), is given by the President of N.M.G.S in recognition of significant contributions to the development of the profession and advancement of the society (N.M.G.S). The Awards cover the following areas:

i. Young Geoscientists/Miner Award
The winner should not be older than 35 years at the time of the Award. He/She must demonstrate outstanding ability and promise in any area of Mining and Pure Geosciences and/or in the application of Geosciences/Mining. The Award carries a cash prize of Fifteen Thousand Naira (N 15,000.00.) and a Certificate of Merit.

ii. Entrepreneurship Award
This Award is for the best organization offering services to the Petroleum and Geological Industries. The Award is a Plaque of Merit

iii. Training Award
This Award is to the Department of Mining/Geosciences adjudged most dynamic in furthering the training of geoscientists and mining in Nigeria. The Award carries a cash prize of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50, 000.00) and a Certificate of Merit.

iv. The Best Chapter Award
The Best Chapter Award is in recognition of the most dynamic Chapter of the Society in promoting the ideals of the N.M.G.S. The Award comprises a Certificate of Merit.

v. The Most Active Member of Council Award
The Most Active Council Member Award is in recognition of the most dynamic member of Council who has being able to promote the ideals of the N.M.G.S in the last Council year. The Award comprises a Certificate of Merit.

vi. The Most Active Institutional Member Award

vii. The valuable Institutional Member Award

viii. Presidential Award for the Most Active Member of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) responsible for organizing Annual International Conferences and Exhibitions of N.M.G,S. The Award comprises a Plaque and a Certificate of Merit.

CATEGORY B: N.M.G.S AWARDS

1. N.M.G.S/DUROTOYE/COMEG AWARD
N.M.G.S/DUROTOYE/COMEG AWARD was endowed by Council of Nigerian Mining and Geoscientists (COMEG) in honour of Late Prof (Mrs) A.B. Durotoye, the 1st Acting Secretary of COMEG. The award is for a deserving Mining Engineer/Geoscientist of any nationality, who has made significant contributions in the field of earth sciences. The Prize is a gold medal. The Awardee will be hosted by COMEG at the NMGS Conference in the year of the award.

2. N.M.G.S/ Rt. HON. DR. NNAMDI AZIKIWE AWARD
This prize, which is in honour of the Late Rt Hon Dr Nnmadi Azikiwe, FNMGS, the 1st patron of the N.M.G.S, is to be awarded to any Nigerian who has consistently promoted and/or supported the study of Earth Science subjects for at least 10 years. This Prize is sponsored by the Council of the NMGS. The award includes a gold medal and a Plaque.

3. N.M.G.S/DPR/CHIEF M. O. FEYIDE AWARD
This prize is in honour of the Late Chief MO Feyide, FNMGS, the first Nigerian Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and founding father of the Department of Petroleum Resources. It is to be awarded to any Nigerian who has made excellent and consistent contribution in the general area of Petroleum Engineering/Geology. The award includes a gold medal and a plaque.

4. N.M.G.S/PTDF/RILWAN LUKMAN AWARD
The NMGS/PTDF/RILWAN LUKMAN AWARD is sponsored by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in honour of Alhaji Dr. Rilwan Lukman, a foremost Mining Engineer and Past Secretary-General and President of OPEC. The award is open to any Mining Engineer/Earth Scientist of any nationality who has made significant contributions to Mining and Geosciences Education and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS). The award is a gold medal and a plaque.

5. N.M.G.S/AMNI PETROLEUM/PROF. MO OYAWOYE AWARD
The N.M.G.S/AMNI/Oyawoye Award is sponsored by AMNI International Petroleum Development Company Ltd (AMNI) in honour of Prof MO Oyawoye, FNMGS, the first African Professor of Geology and a renowned petrologist. The Award is open to any hard rock geologist of any nationality who has made significant contributions to hard rock geology of the African continent. The award is a gold medal and a plaque.

6. N.M.G.S/MOSUNMOLU/Dr. E.A. IFATUROTI AWARD
The N.M.G.S/Mosunmolu/Dr EA IFATUROTI Award is sponsored by Mosunmolu Ltd. The award is for any Mining Engineer/Earth Scientist of any nationality who has made consistent and excellent contribution in the general area of Mining and Mineral Resources Development in Africa. The award is a gold medal and a plaque.

7. N.M.G.S/VERSA-TECH/PO NWASIKE AWARD
The N.M.G.S/VERSA-TECH/PO NWASIKE Award is sponsored by Versa-Tech Nigeria Limited and is open to any leading Mining Engineer or Geoscientist who is an active member of the N.M.G.S and has contributed to promoting the career of young mining engineers and geoscientists and has also distinguished himself in the profession. The Award is a plaque and gold medal.

8. N.M.G.S/APIMS/PROF. R.A. REYMENT AWARD
The N.M.G.S/NAPIMS/PROF RA REYMENT AWARD is named after Prof R.A. Reyment, the first Head, Department of Geology, University of Ibadan, who studied virtually all the sedimentary basins of Nigeria and produced the first coherent synthesis of their biostratigraphy. The award is made for consistent excellent work in the general area of soft rock geology of Nigeria. The Award is a plaque and gold medal.

9. N.M.G.S/GEOEXPLORATION/Akin GEORGE AWARD
N.M.G.S/GEOEXPLORATION/Akin GEORGE AWARD was endowed by Geoexploration (Nigeria) Limited in honour of its principal Mr Akinola GEORGE, the 26th President of the N.M.G.S. The award is for Geoscientist of any nationality, who has made significant contributions in the field of earth sciences through persistent and consistent practice of the profession in any of the the disciplines of geosciences anywhere in the world. The Prize is a Plaque cast in polished rock/marble and a gold medal. The award is being endowed with the sum of one million naira (N 1,000,000.00) to be fixed in the bank for which the annual accrued interest shall be used to service the award.

10. N.M.G.S/PROF. S.C. TEME AWARD
N.M.G.S/PROF. S.C. TEME AWARD was endowed by the 27th President of the N.M.G.S. The award is for Geoscientist of any nationality, for the best paper presented and full paper submitted in the field of Engineering Geology & Geotechnics during the Annual N.M.G.S International Conferences & Exhibitions. The Award is the sum of one hundred thousand naira (N 100,000.00) and a gold medal.

11. N.M.G.S/SHELL AWARD
The N.M.G.S/Shell Award is the highest NMGS award. It is sponsored by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC). The award is for earth scientists of any nationality who have made significant contributions to the field of earth sciences by persistent and consistent, excellent research in either or both of the pure and applied aspects of the earth sciences of the African continent. The Prize is a Plaque cast in polished rock.
